Jobless claims highest since August 2023, new data shows

Filings for unemployment benefits went up to 258,000 for the week ending Oct. 5, which represents the most claims since Aug. 5, 2023, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.

Unemployment claims are at the highest level in more than than one year, according the latest data released on Thursday.

Filings for unemployment benefits went up to 258,000 for the week ending Oct. 5, which represents the most claims since Aug. 5, 2023, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.

The 258,000 figure is 33,000 higher than the prior week and above the forecasted amount of 230,000.
