The White House on Monday urged Senate Democrats to support a bill that would ban transgender athletes from competing in women's sports, following President Donald Trump's No Men in Women's Sports Executive Order.

The bill was introduced by Alabama Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville, and aims to codify the president's executive order. The order blocks federal funding to schools that allow transgender athletes to compete against biological women.

The bill also comes after a New York Times poll in January found that 79% of respondents believe transgender athletes should not be competing against biological female athletes.

“Given America’s overwhelming support to protect women’s sports, Senate Democrats should put aside their left-wing agenda and vote to pass this nonpartisan, commonsense policy,” Harrison Fields, White House deputy press secretary, told The Daily Signal.

Although the effort to ban transgender athletes has seen support from Democratic voters, the bill would need seven Senate Democrats in order to pass, which sources told the outlet was unlikely.

Tuberville also urged Democrats last week to join his effort, highlighting the bipartisan support he's seen among voters in the swing states of Arizona and Pennsylvania.

"Almost 70% of Arizonans don’t believe men should compete in girls’ and women’s sports. In Pennsylvania, this number rises to nearly 75%. And in Michigan, nearly 78% of voters want men out of women’s sports," Tuberville posted on X. "I hope my Democrat Senate colleagues from these states will LISTEN to their constituents and join me in protecting women’s sports."
