President Donald Trump on Wednesday night said that he has notified Washington D.C.'s Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser to clean up several "unsightly" homeless encampments, or else the federal government would.

The announcement comes the day after the mayor's office said it would rename the city's Black Lives Matter Plaza that is just a few blocks from the White House.

Trump said that the priority would be to clean up the encampments near the White House and the State Department.

"We have notified the Mayor of Washington, D.C., that she must clean up all of the unsightly homeless encampments in the City," he wrote in a post on Truth Social. "If she is not capable of doing so, we will be forced to do it for her! Washington, D.C. must become CLEAN and SAFE! We want to be proud of our Great Capital again."

The president went on to thank Bowser for the work she has already done to improve and clean up the city, highlighting their willingness to work together to straighten the city up.

The development comes after Trump and Bowser expressed a willingness to work together in December, claiming they had a "great meeting" before he returned to office. But Trump has also blasted the mayor in the past as "incompetent" for withdrawing military personnel and federal law enforcement from 2020 Black Lives Matters protests, per The Hill.
