On Monday, President Donald Trump offered his best wishes for the season of Ramadan and those participating in the month-long Muslim holiday, which is marked by prayer and fasting.

"Today, I send my warmest greetings for the holy month of Ramadan – a sacred time of fasting, prayer, and communal gathering," he wrote. "It is a time to draw hope, courage, and inspiration to lead lives of holiness and virtue."

While millions of Muslims in the U.S. are observing Ramadan, Trump said that his administration would recommit to "upholding religious liberty that is such an integral part of the American way of life."

"Above all, we renew our resolve to building a future of peace, and to recognizing the dignity imprinted on every human soul," he wrote about Ramadan, which began Saturday. "This Ramadan, I offer my best wishes for a season of joyous reflection on God’s endless grace and infinite love. May God bless you and your families during this wondrous season."

In 2017, the first year of his first term in the office, Trump refused to host iftar dinner during Ramadan, breaking a nearly 20-year-old tradition in Washington D.C., as the Guardian reported. According to the United Nations Refugee Agency, iftar dinner is a traditional meal held at sunset every day during Ramadan.

Trump, however, changed his mind, and in the following years of his first term as president, hosted iftar dinners as a way to recognize Islam as "one of the world's greatest religions."

"In gathering together this evening, we honor a sacred tradition of one of the world's great religions," he said in 2018, according to NBC News.

In 2019, Trump also hosted the iftar dinner, stating, "Ramadan is a time when people joined forces in pursuit of hope, tolerance and peace. It is in this spirit that we come together tonight."
