Trump: 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports will take effect
At a briefing Monday evening, Trump told reporters the tariffs will go into effect beginning Tuesday.
Following the announcement of another $100 billion investment from Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC, Trump took questions from the media and confirmed that the tariffs announced last month will go into effect Tuesday.
The tariffs were initially paused to allow Canada and Mexico to exert effort to protect their southern and northern borders with the United States.
The stock market reacted with the S&P 500 index dipping 2%. Fears over inflation and economic uncertainty add to an already tense relationship with the United States’ neighboring nations.
