White House's Conway condemns FBI agents' handling of Flynn, warns 'It can happen to you'
Then FBI agents Peter Stzrok and Lisa Page misrepresented thousands of 'wonderful' other agents with their malicious conduct, says Conway
Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway on Friday condemned senior FBI agents for their handling of the investigation into Michael Flynn when he was national security adviser, saying they were responsible for the plan to "harass and embarrass" him.
“What has happened to Michael Flynn ... should have a chilling effect on every American because if it can happen to the president's newly installed national security advisor, it can happen to you," Conway told Fox News, amid the recent release on previously sealed court documents that suggest the retired Army general was set up by FBI agents and pressured into a plea deal in connection with the bureau's Russia collusion probe.
Flynn pleaded guilty in 2018 to lying to the FBI about his contacts with a Russian ambassador during the Trump presidential transition. Earlier this year, he vacated that plea.
Conway said Friday that the actions of a select few agents "damaged the reputation of the bureau insofar as they misrepresented "the rank-and-file 35,000 wonderful FBI agents across this country and world that do a fabulous job on behalf of each of us.”
She also downplayed President Trump's suggestion that might bring back Flynn, amid new revelations from the unsealed documents.
“I think he is more likely to bring him to the Oval Office or White House as his guest and to review what has happened to Michael Flynn, which should have a chilling effect on every American because if it can happen to the president’s newly installed national security adviser, it can happen to you,” she said.
She also made a point of reminding the viewing audience that it was President Obama who initially warned now-President Trump about the potential threat that Flynn posed to the administration.
“I would remind everybody that President Obama told President-elect Donald trump that he had ‘two things to worry about. North Korea and Michael Flynn," Conway said. The warning, in her view, was at best "weird," conflating a "nuclear capable dictator" with a general who has served with distinction for three decades.
