Witkoff said there was "a lot of detail" to work out in order to secure a peace deal, but if eventually achieved it could be "something that would be very, very important for the world at large."

United States Special Envoy Steve Witkoff on Monday night appeared optimistic about securing a peace deal that ends the years-long war between Russia and Ukraine.

Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow last week for the pair's third meeting of the year, as President Donald Trump pushes for a permanent ceasefire between the two countries.

The envoy said that a deal that incorporates Russia's demands would be complex given the complicated history between the two countries, but the deal would involve "these so-called five territories."

“It was a compelling meeting,” Witkoff told Fox News' Sean Hannity. “And toward the end, we actually came up with — I’m going to say ‘finally,’ but I don’t mean it in the way that we were waiting. I mean it in the way that it took a while for us to get to this place — what Putin’s request is to have permanent peace here."

Witkoff said there was "a lot of detail" to work out in order to secure the deal, but if eventually achieved it could be "something that would be very, very important for the world at large." He did not expand further on Russia's demands.

The Trump administration official also said that there could be additional commercial agreements between Russia and the United States that could reshape the Russia-United States relationship.

The comments come after Trump expressed frustration at the pace of the talks, and threatened to impose more sanctions on Russia if a deal is not reached by the end of the month, according to Axios.
