Trump extends travel, trade bans with Canada, Mexico

The Trump administration has extended its ban on non-essential travel and trade across U.S. borders with Canada and Mexico amid the coronavirus. 

The announcements were made Tuesday by President Trump and the Department of Homeland Security.

Trump announced the trade restriction Tuesday when asked by a reporter at the White House.

"For now, yes,” he said. But we're talking to Canada. "As things clean up in terms of the plague, we're both going to want to do the normal.  We want to get back.  Everything we want to get back to normal.”  

The travel restriction was extended one day ahead of its original, March 20 expiration date. 

The president didn’t not say for how long the trade ban will be extended.

"Non-essential travel will not be permitted until this administration is convinced that doing so is safe and secure," said interim DHS chief Chad Wolf, according to Reuters.

Canadian and Mexican officials have agreed to extending restrictions, the wire service also said.
