A fire erupted at one of the world’s largest battery storage plants located in Moss Landing, California, forcing the evacuation of more than 1,000 people in the area.

The fire began on Thursday afternoon and roughly 1,500 people evacuated the Moss Landing and the Elkhorn Slough area, according to The Mercury News.

The fire was still burning as of early Friday but it hadn't spread past the facility, according to a local official.

The Moss Landing Power Plant, which is owned by Texas-based company Vistra Energy, contains tens of thousands of lithium batteries, according to the Associated Press.

In an interview with KSBW-TV, Monterey County Supervisor Glenn Church described the fire as a "disaster."
