Movements of Biden, Trump could be tracked using fitness app, report says, Secret Service downplays
“We do not assess that there were any impacts to protective operations or threats to any protectees,” the U.S. Secret Service says
The movements of high-profile politicians like President Joe Biden, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, and other world leaders could be tracked online through Strava, a fitness app that their security guards use, according to a investigative report.
The U.S. Secret Service downplayed the findings in the report published by the French newspaper Le Monde.
“We do not assess that there were any impacts to protective operations or threats to any protectees,” the agency said. Locations “are regularly disclosed as part of public schedule releases.”
The agency said its agents are not permitted to use personal electronic devices while on official duty but there is nothing in place prohibiting the personal use of social media outside of their protective assignments.
“Affected personnel has been notified,” the agency said. “We will review this information to determine if any additional training or guidance is required.”
