Trump campaign slams release of additional evidence in January 6 case

Former President Donald Trump's presidential campaign on Friday blasted United States District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan for unsealing additional evidence that accompanied a brief in Trump's January 6 case.

The judge agreed last week to release the trove of nearly 1,900 pages of new evidence in the case, the majority of which had already been publicly available in other ways, but delayed the order for one week so Trump's team could evaluate litigation options relating to the order. 

Trump's team filed a formal request to delay the release until after the presidential election next month, but Chutkan ruled on Thursday night that the request did not satisfy the requirements for keeping it sealed and that Trump's team had ample time to file its rebuttal to the evidence by the existing Nov. 7 deadline.

Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung slammed the new documents in a statement on Friday, claiming the entire case was a "sham."

"Radical Democrats are hell-bent on interfering in the presidential election on behalf of Lyin’ Kamala Harris," Cheung told Fox News. "With just over two weeks until Election Day, President Trump is dominating this race and Crazed Liberals throughout the Deep State are freaking out."

"As mandated by the Supreme Court’s historic decision on Presidential Immunity and other vital jurisprudence, this entire case is a sham and a partisan, Unconstitutional Witch Hunt that should be dismissed entirely — as should ALL of the remaining Democrat hoaxes," he added.

The majority of evidence is still sealed as of Friday, but the group of nearly 1,900 pages primarily includes evidence that have already been viewed in some form, such as transcripts by the House Select Committee on Jan. 6, Trump campaign press releases and fundraising emails, and transcripts of Trump White House press conferences.

One part that had not been previously disclosed was the transcript of a January 6 committee interview with an unnamed former Trump White House valet. The valet claimed he told Trump that coverage of his speech on the Ellipse was interrupted by footage of the riot at the Capitol, according to Politico.

“It was ‘sir, they cut if off because they’re rioting down at the Capitol,’” the valet said he told Trump at the time. “And he was like, ‘What do you mean?’ I said, ‘It’s, like, They’re rioting down there at the Capitol.’ And he was like ‘Oh, really?’ And then he was like ‘All right, let’s go see.’” 

The valet then testified that he got Trump a Diet Coke while the former president watched news coverage of the riot and his speech.
