Pennsylvania arson suspect formally arraigned on eight state charges
The suspect was arraigned at the Dauphin County Magisterial District Courthouse, where he was charged with domestic terrorism, aggravated arson, attempted criminal homicide and prowling at night, among others.
Pennsylvania arson suspect Cody Balmer on Monday was arraigned in state court on eight charges.
Balmer was arrested by state police on Sunday, on suspicion of purposely setting Pennsylvania Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro's mansion on fire. Balmer allegedly admitted to setting the fire, which occurred while Shapiro and his family were home, but no one was injured.
The suspect was arraigned at the Dauphin County Magisterial District Courthouse, where he was charged with domestic terrorism, aggravated arson, attempted criminal homicide and prowling at night, among others.
Balmer was also ordered to stay in custody without bond, after it was revealed that he allegedly committed the new crimes while out on bail for a 2023 simple assault charge, according to the New York Post. Balmer was accused in 2023 of stomping on his 10-year-old son's broken leg and beating his wife.
The suspect has additionally admitted to having "dangerous mental health" issues, the outlet reported, but it is not clear what the issues are. However, Balmer's mother was allegedly looking for her son before the arson, and asked police to help get him off the streets.
Balmer's mother said her son had gone off his medication in the days before the attack.
Balmer is now expected to be back in court for the arson case on April 23.
