Georgia DA signals charging decisions in Trump election case to come this summer

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis indicated in a Monday letter that she would announce any charging decisions stemming from her investigation of former President Donald Trump's efforts to challenge the 2020 election results in Georgia at some point during the summer.

Willis has investigated Trump's efforts in the state in a controversial investigation that saw grand jury forewoman Emily Kohrs make a high-profile string of media appearances during which she appeared erratic and hinted at possible indictments.

The DA wrote in a letter to Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat that she expected any charging decisions to generate public outcry, saying "[o]pen-source intelligence has indicated the announcement of decisions in this case may provoke a significant public reaction."

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution first reported on the letter.

The timeline for said announcements, she indicated, would be during the Fulton County Superior Court's fourth term of court, which will run from July 11 to Sept. 1. 

Willis warned Labat to heighten security in anticipation of the announcement.

"We have seen in recent years that some may go outside of public expressions of opinion that are protected by the First Amendment to engage in acts of violence that will endanger the safety our community," the DA indicated.

Should Willis opt to pursue charges against Trump, she would be the second district attorney to do so after Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg announced charges against the former president in connection with a 2016 payment his then-personal attorney, Michael Cohen, made to Stormy Daniels.

Trump has pleaded not guilty to those charges and called the case a political witch hunt.
