Senate Republicans set to present their coronavirus stimulus measure

Senate Republicans reportedly plan to  present their next coronavirus relief package Monday afternoon, after a weekend of Capitol Hill negotiations with top White House officials.

The bill follows the Democrat-controlled House having passed its measure, the $3 trillion-plus CARES Act, in May. 

Congress is under pressure to pass another round of stimulus spending, with previously passed measures, including one that gives some jobless Americans $600 a week in enhanced federal unemployment benefit, set to expire at the end of the month.

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows met Saturday and Sunday with Senate Republican negotiators.

The Senate GOP’s bill will unlikely get enough support from Senate Democrats for passage and is considered a starting point for both sides in negotiations.

As of Sunday, the GOP proposal included unemployment benefits at 70% of lost wages, back-to-work tax credits, K-12 education cash and provisions that address coronavirus liability protections, according to Politico. 

The Senate GOP measure will likely cost closer to $1 trillion and will not include money for state and local governments. It also reportedly will call for an extension on unemployment benefits separate from a larger relief package to meet the deadline for the enhanced unemployment benefits ending Friday.
