Pelosi plans to run again, stay on as Democratic leader, despite earlier promise, report
The 81-year-old House speaker reportedly plans to file for reelection in her San Francisco district
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi reportedly will continue on in her capacity as the chamber's top Democrat after she turns 82 this year.
Pelosi will file and run for reelection in her northern California district next year (her 18th term) and is considering whether to stay in leadership, despite an initial promise to give up her role as top House Democrat, CNN reported over the weekend.
Pelosi will primarily spend the next year raising money for Democrats as they attempt to hold onto their narrow majority in the lower chamber.
She has led her party in the House since 2003, serving twice as the minority leader and twice as speaker.
It is unclear who would succeed Pelosi in her role as speaker. A source told CNN, "Pelosi sees a responsibility to groom and advance the next generation of leaders but not to name a successor. That's up to the caucus in her view, whenever that may be."
In her current term, Pelosi has presided over the House as it has passed two major spending packages that comprise key elements of President Biden's social spending agenda. In so doing, she has earned praise from close to all of her Democratic colleagues, despite having an increasingly hard time corralling the progressive faction of her conference.
