New Jersey Democratic Rep. Donald Norcross is now expected to go through an "extended recovery" in his home state following a serious medical event, his medical team and office said Tuesday.

Norcross, who was admitted to a hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina, has been absent from the lower chamber since his hospitalization on April 6. The lawmaker was admitted for a gallbladder infection that turned into sepsis.

Dr. Eric Kupersmith, Chief Physician Executive at Cooper University Health Care in New Jersey, where Norcross is now recovering, said his team was able to treat the underlying infection and its complications, but that the 66-year-old lawmaker will still need more time to recover.

"Congressman Norcross is responding well to treatment, but faces an extended recovery that could require physical rehabilitation," the physician said in a statement released by Norcross' office. "He remains in intensive care."

The lawmaker's office said that the congressman's district offices remain open to constituents, and that his staff has been in regular contact with Norcross, who is actively monitoring events on Capitol Hill.

It is not clear how long the extended hospitalization will last, including whether it will extend beyond the House's two-week hiatus for Easter and Spring break.
