House Democrat vows to work with Trump on tariff plan
Golden highlighted that he proposed a 10% blanket tariff earlier this year, but was pleased that Trump's baseline for his own tariffs was the same.
Maine Democratic Rep. Jared Golden on Thursday appeared optimistic about certain areas of President Donald Trump's tariff plan and vowed to help the president enshrine the tariffs in federal law.
Trump on Wednesday imposed global tariffs of at least 10% on all imports, promising that his historic "Liberation Day" plan would rebalance global trade, reduce the national debt and "supercharge" the U.S. economy.
Golden highlighted that he proposed a 10% blanket tariff earlier this year, but was pleased that Trump's baseline for his own tariffs was the same. His optimism is in sharp contrast to the rest of his party, which has slammed the president over the tariffs.
"What I can say now is I’m pleased the president is building his tariff agenda on the foundation of a universal 10% tariff like the one I proposed in the BUILT USA Act," Golden told Fox News. "This ring fence around the American economy is a good start to erasing our unsustainable trade deficits.
"I’m eager to work with the president to fix the broken ‘free trade’ system that made multinational corporations rich but ruined manufacturing communities across the country," he continued. "But tariffs must be paired with policies that prioritize American families’ prosperity."
Golden declined to comment on the higher tariffs the president imposed, stating that he needs to look it over more before he can weigh in, and called for more actions to be taken that benefit the working class.
"Tariffs are a first step in rewriting a rigged trade system, but they cannot be the last one," he said.
The lawmaker also indicated that he could get support for enshrining 10% tariffs from other Democrats, but cautioned that House Republicans could be skeptical of the plan.
"I think that the president and his team would have to do some heavy lifting to make sure that the House Republicans supported it," he said. "But if they didn't have a lot of defections, you know, could I find some like-minded Democrats for a 10% global tariff? I think so."
