GOP lawmakers call for Olympic committee to ban trans athletes from competing in women's sports

The lawmakers asked the committee to "reaffirm" their commitment to "upholding integrity in female sports" by only allowing biological women to compete against each other, and asked the next IOC president to do so the same.

A group of Congressional Republicans on Tuesday wrote a letter to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), asking it to change its policies on transgender athletes competing against biological women.

The letter comes the week before the IOC is expected to meet to elect its new leader, and discuss the 2028 Summer Olympic Games, which will be held in Los Angeles.

The letter, led by Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Jim Risch, Idaho, and Utah Rep. Burgess Owens, was signed by more than two dozen lawmakers.

"As the International Olympic Committee prepares to elect new leadership, we write to express the critical need for increased protection of the rights of female athletes to fair, safe competition," the lawmakers wrote, per Fox News. "In the United States, we honor our female Olympians. These athletes, and so many others, have inspired generations of young women around the world to compete and excel.

"Their legacy underscores the vital importance of fairness in women’s sports at every level of competition," they continued. "Future Olympians are counting on the IOC to protect the opportunities of women and girls to contribute to this proud tradition.

"To do so, the IOC must base eligibility for women’s athletic competitions on biological sex. Allowing biological males to compete in women’s categories undermines competitive opportunities, safety, and respect for female athletes," they added.

The lawmakers asked the committee to "reaffirm" their commitment to "upholding integrity in female sports" by only allowing biological women to compete against each other, and asked the next IOC president to do so the same.

The letter was signed by Republican Sens. Jim Banks, Marsha Blackburn, Mike Crapo, Steve Daines, Lindsey Graham, Josh Hawley, Jim Justice, James Lankford, Tim Sheehy and Tommy Tuberville.

GOP Reps. Lauren Boebert, Vern Buchanan, Tim Burchett, Kat Cammack, Dan Crenshaw, Brad Finstad, Craig Goldman, Mark Green, Ashley Hinson, Mike Kennedy, Nick LaLota, Blake Moore, Riley Moore, Austin Pfluger, John Rose and Claudia Tenney also signed the letter.

The letter comes after President Donald Trump said he would direct Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to prohibit any transgender athletes attempting to compete as women in the 2028 games.
