Senate Democrats block GOP-effort to impose sanctions on the International Criminal Court
The measure was created to punish the ICC after it put out arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defense minister and a Hamas official.
Senate Democrats have blocked a Republican-backed legislation that would have put sanctions on the International Criminal Court.
Democratic lawmakers argued Tuesday that the bill would negatively impact U.S. allies and American businesses, according to The Hill newspaper.
The final vote to move the bill forward was 54-45. Republicans needed 60 votes in order to advance the legislation.
The measure was created to punish the ICC after it put out arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defense minister and a Hamas official, accusing them of committing war crimes amid the Israel-Hamas war.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., criticized the court's decision, saying it was “beyond the pale" to compare Israeli leaders to Hamas in terms of “moral equivalency," according to CNN.
Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman was the only Democrat who supported the legislation.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said that while he supports Israel, he could not support the anti-ICC bill.
“However, as much as I oppose the ICC bias against Israel, as much as I want to see that institution drastically reformed and reshaped, the bill before us is poorly drafted and deeply problematic," he said.
