Firm co-owned by Rep. Omar's husband received hundreds of thousands in COVID-19 relief loans
The loans are meant to help businesses struggling due to the coronavirus pandemic.
An organization co-owned by Tim Mynett, the husband of Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in government loans meant to help businesses struggling due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Fox News said that public records indicate that the E Street Group got half a million dollars in Economic Injury Disaster Loans and almost $135,000 in Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans.
Campaign finance filings indicate that the organization has scored millions from Omar's campaign over time, according to reports.
Omar and Mynett were married in March, and according to Fox News, in a mid-November email Omar said that she was severing ties with E Street in order to quell questions regarding her campaign and the business.
“Every dollar that was spent went to a team of more than 20 that were helping us fight back against attacks and organize on the ground and online in a COVID-19 world,” Omar said in the campaign email, according to Fox News. “And Tim — beyond his salary at the firm — received no profit whatsoever from the consulting relationship the firm provided.”
In a March Twitter thread Omar had addressed the topic of her campaign's relationship with E Street: "If the trolls looked at the our [sic] campaign finance reports, they would see a substantial portion is for digital buys, print and advertising which are costs that get passed on," Omar said in the thread.
"My relationship with Tim began long after this work started," she noted. "We consulted with a top FEC campaign attorney to ensure there were no possible legal issues with our relationship. We were told this is not uncommon and that no, there weren’t."
