Dozens of conservative leaders push Congress to pass clean CR that avoids shutdown
The signers all praised the resolution, which has been backed by President Trump, claiming it would give the Department of Government Efficiency more time to continue its work in reducing wasteful spending.
Dozens of Republican activists and leaders on Friday signed a letter to Congress that urged GOP members to pass a Continuing Resolution (CR) that would delay a looming government shutdown until September.
Republican Senate and House leaders are considering a CR that would fund the federal government until the end of September, while they try to pass 12 separate budget bills. But some GOP lawmakers have strongly opposed the effort, which would require near unanimous conservative support to pass.
The signers all praised the resolution, which has been backed by President Donald Trump, claiming it would give the Department of Government Efficiency more time to continue its work in reducing wasteful spending, The Hill reported.
“Conservatives support President Trump’s efforts to streamline and rebuild a federal government that works for the American people," the conservatives wrote. "As the March 14 funding deadline approaches, we support President Trump in his efforts to pass a Continuing Resolution to September 30th and urge all conservatives in Congress to do the same."
"The opening days of the Trump administration have resulted in more efforts to cut wasteful spending and restrain an unfettered bureaucracy than many of us have seen in our lifetimes," they continued. "It is critical that any funding deal not limit the ability of President Trump to continue this work."
The more than 70 signers included leaders of the Leadership Institute, Conservative Action Project, Conservative Partnership Institute, and Citizens United, among others.
House Speaker Mike Johnson said he hopes to unveil the "clean" CR early next week.
