Congressional Judiciary Republicans probe whether Ivy League schools collude on raising tuition fees
“We are particularly concerned that Ivy League member institutions appear to collectively raise tuition prices while engaging in price discrimination by offering selective financial aid packages to maximize profit,” the lawmakers wrote.
The Republican leaders of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees on Thursday launched a probe into whether Ivy League schools are colluding when it comes to raising higher education tuition prices.
House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, Senate Judiciary antitrust subcommittee chair Mike Lee and House Judiciary Antitrust Subcommittee chair Scott Fitzgerald sent letters to all eight Ivy League institutions, seeking documents and communications between the Ivy Leagues and college organizations regarding tuition prices.
The eight schools are: Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, the University of Pennsylvania and Yale.
“We are particularly concerned that Ivy League member institutions appear to collectively raise tuition prices while engaging in price discrimination by offering selective financial aid packages to maximize profit,” the lawmakers wrote.
The letters come as Republican scrutiny on elite institutions has deepened in recent years, especially in the wake of antisemitic protests that broke out on college campuses last year. Republicans have also accused the Ivy Leagues of holding liberal biases that favor alleged diversity, equity, and inclusion applicants.
“The House and Senate Committees are concerned that the Ivy League member institutions’ coordinated practices and alleged collusion violate the Sherman Act and that the institutions continue to benefit from their prior collusion, despite no longer having an antitrust exemption,” the lawmakers wrote.
The lawmakers asked the universities to produce the documents and communications by 5 p.m. Eastern on April 22.
