US, Russia agree to put together 'high-level teams' with the goal to end war in Ukraine
The officials discussing the war include Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, national security adviser Mike Waltz and Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff.
Top officials from Russia and the U.S. agreed Tuesday to put together "high-level teams"in order to bring an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The officials that met include Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Rubio, U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and Steve Witkoff, President Trump's Middle East envoy.
Rubio said that both embassies in Moscow and Washington would have to be re-staffed as "we're going to need to have vibrant diplomatic missions that are able to function normally in order to be able to continue these conduits."
Rubio said President Donald Trump's goal is to bring the conflict to an end.
"In order for a conflict to end, everyone involved in that conflict has to be okay with it," Rubio said. "It has to be acceptable to them."
Neither Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky nor any European leaders are part of the talks but are expected to participate in future ones should the Saudi Arabia summit result in progress toward a peace deal.
Andriy Yermak, an adviser to Zelensky, said that as of now there isn't a plan for advisers from Ukraine and Russia to have a meeting.
The U.S. has been financially supporting Ukraine in the war since 2022 when Russia first invaded the neighboring country.
