Comer issues flurry of subpoenas of for Biden family and associates' financial records
The subpoenas mark the latest effort by House Republicans to secure evidence of direct benefits to President Biden from his family's foreign business dealings.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer on Thursday announced new subpoenas for financial records from several members of President Joe Biden's family, their business associates and son Hunter Biden's companies.
"We're subpoenaing several credit card companies through the interviews and depositions we've conducted thus far, we've learned that there were several credit cards that were used by several members of the Biden family, we believe, for personal expenses and we believe that these credit cards were being paid by CEFC or through CEFC-funded affiliates," Comer announced on Fox Business on Thursday.
A source familiar with the scope of the subpoenas told Just the News that the Oversight Committee chairman is requesting financial records for three Biden family members: Hunter, James, and Sarah Biden.
The chairman also subpoenaed financial records from family associates, business partners, and several Biden companies:
- Eric Schwerin, Hunter Biden's associate at Rosemont Seneca who helped manage Joe Biden's finances
- Gongwen Dong, a CEFC official involved in the formation of a joint venture with Hunter Biden
- Mervyn Yan, an "independent contractor" who facilitated payments to Hunter and James Biden from CEFC
- Hunter Biden companies: Rosemont Seneca Partners, Rosemont Seneca Advisors, Rosemont Seneca Bohai, Owasco P.C. and Hudson West III.
A previous investigation by GOP Sens. Chuck Grassley and Ron Johnson into Hunter Biden's business dealings uncovered several credit cards used by the Biden family that were backed by a CEFC-affiliated entity.
The investigation found that the Treasury Department flagged transactions related to the credit cards in multiple Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs).
This finding was reinforced by testimony from former CEFC contractor Mervyn Yan, who facilitated payments to the Biden family on behalf of the company.
The impeachment inquiry has worked to find any benefits, including financial, that President Biden received from his family's business dealings around the globe.
The committee found, before becoming president, Joe Biden received a $40,000 check marked as a "loan repayment" from his brother, James Biden's, account, but the money may have come from a Chinese company. The funds that were used had been deposited James and Sarah Biden's personal account days after Hunter Biden sent his uncle a $150,000 payment from funds that originated with a CEFC affiliate.
"The subpoenaed financial records will help [the Oversight Committee] determine whether Joe Biden abused his office by selling access and/or by receiving payments or other benefits in exchange for official acts, which is a critical aspect of this impeachment inquiry," Comer said in a post to X.
