Team USA wins most Olympic medals overall, ties China for most golds
Team USA women's basketball took gold on Sunday, tying the U.S. and China for most gold medals
The U.S. women's basketball team's eleventh-hour victory over France secured Team USA's position in the gold medal count. With the women's basketball win, the U.S. tied China for most gold medals at 40 and took home the most medals overall at 126.
"The U.S. easily won the total medal count with 126. Aside from the 40 gold, the Americans won 42 silver and 44 bronze," ESPN reported.
U.S. women's basketball coach Cheryl Reeve knew the medal standings before her team played on Sunday.
"I saw the medal count beforehand, so I knew," Reeve said. "That's what we need -- more pressure."
China finished second in medals overall, with 91 medals, consisting of 40 gold, 27 silver, and 24 bronze.
"The last time the U.S. didn't top the standings in gold medals was at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, when the Americans finished second to China, 48-36," ESPN reported.
