President Donald Trump has reportedly sent a letter to Iran Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei expressing interest in making a deal with the Middle East country regarding its nuclear program.

In an interview set to air Sunday on Fox News, Trump says he sent the letter Wednesday saying he wants to negotiate a new nuclear deal with Iran, according to the Axios news outlet.

"The other alternative is you have to do something because Iran can't have a nuclear weapon," Trump said in the upcoming interview.

Khamenei in the past has said he does not want to participate in direct talks with the Trump administration due to his distrust in the U.S.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said he is open to having a dialogue with the U.S.
