Pentagon says America is meeting commitments in US-Taliban agreement
The U.S. has reduced the number of forces in Afghanistan and has withdrawn from five bases.
In a Tuesday statement regarding the U.S.-Taliban agreement inked in February, Pentagon spokesperson Jonathan Hoffman said that America has met its commitment to decrease its force presence in Afghanistan to 8,600, and depart from five military bases.
"July 13, 2020 marks 135 days since the signing of the U.S.-Taliban Agreement on February 29, 2020," Hoffman said in the statement. "As stipulated in the agreement, the United States agreed to reduce its forces in Afghanistan to 8,600 and withdraw from five bases. We have met this obligation. U.S. forces in Afghanistan remain in the mid-8,000's, and five bases formerly occupied by U.S. forces have been transferred to our Afghan partners."
House Freedom Caucus Chair Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) and Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) last week sent a letter urging President Trump to immediately extricate U.S. military forces from both Afghanistan and Iraq.
"Iraq and Afghanistan do not possess any weapons that can reach the continental United States. Moreover, neither nation is vital to the national security of the United States," the lawmakers wrote. "Finally, neither nation is worth one more Gold Star family."
