The Bolivian soldier who shot and killed the Argentinian revolutionary Che Guevara died this week at 80, over 50 years after he pulled the trigger and executed Guevara in Bolivia.

Mario Terán passed away on Thursday after a reported battle with a long illness. He is survived by a wife and two children.

Terán, who shot Guevara on orders from superiors, continued to serve in Bolivia’s military after the execution. He lived out his days under an alias in the city of Santa Cruz de la Sera.

The soldier was reported to have described the killing of Guevara as “the worst moment of my life."
