China's Ministry of Commerce vowed Friday to retaliate if President Donald Trump goes through with a plan to increase tariffs on exports from its country next week.

“If the U.S. insists on its own way, China will take all necessary countermeasures to defend its legitimate rights and interests,” the spokesperson said, according to the CNBC outlet. “We urge the U.S. side to not repeat its own mistakes, and to return as soon as possible to the right track of properly resolving conflicts through dialogue on equal footing.”

Trump on Thursday said he would impose another 10% tariff on Chinese imports starting on March 4.

This would be additional to the tariffs already put in place on Feb. 4.

Trump said these the tariffs are in response to China's role in fentanyl production as the drug has lead to many overdoses in the U.S.

A source told CNBC that China will likely respond by raising tariffs on certain American imports.
