Trump team sends SCOTUS arguments for keeping him on the ballot
The filings are part of Trump's appeal to the Supreme Court of the Colorado Supreme Court decision to disqualify him from the ballot under the 14th
Former President Donald Trump's legal team on Thursday submitted filings to the Supreme Court in which they asserted that removing him from the ballot could "unleash chaos and bedlam" nationwide.
They further urged the court to put a "decisive end" to 14th Amendment-based challenges to his eligibility to run for the presidency, Politico reported. The filings are part of Trump's appeal to the Supreme Court of the Colorado Supreme Court decision to disqualify him from the ballot under the 14th Amendment.
The case is one of several legal challenges to his ballot eligibility contending that Trump's role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot rendered him ineligible under the "insurrection" provision in the Amendment. Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows issued a similar decision in the wake of the Colorado ruling, though a Maine judge opted this week to defer judgement on that case until the Supreme Court issued its own decision.
Also on Thursday, a Washington judge rejected a similar challenge brought by state residents.
"An order directing the secretary of state to take different action, an order from this court, is simply not supported by the statutes and not supported by the affidavit of the electors," wrote Superior Court Judge Mary Sue Wilson.
