Lost his touch? Former President Obama of late has gotten it wrong a couple of times
The former president has been missing all his marks during recent appearances
Former President Barack Obama has in recent days delivered speeches that included a glaring geography blunder and a dire warning that missed its mark, resulting is speculation that one of the best orators of his generation is off his game.
During a lengthy speech Monday at the global climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland, Obama, now almost five years out of office, referred to Scotland as "the Emerald Isles," which is, in singular form, the nickname for Ireland, not Scotland.
"I like Obama. But Emerald Isles? Really?" one Twitter user posted.
Obama also delivered what sounded like a standard stump speech in which he urged young people to "vote like your life depends on it, because it does."
The former president spent time during the conference with leaders of small island nations whose vulnerability due to rising sea levels is something he spoke about during his address.
"I want you to stay angry," Obama, who owns island property in Hawaii and Massachusetts' Martha's Vineyard, said after discussing the rising tides. "I want you to stay frustrated. Keep pushing harder and harder for more and more, because that’s what’s required to meet this challenge."
Just days earlier, while stumping for fellow Democrat Terry McAuliffe in his failed bid to again become Virginia governor, Obama misread the voter outrage over COVID-19 related mandates and the liberal drift of public school curricula that helped Republican nominee Glenn Youngkin to victory.
"This fake outrage that right-wing media peddles to juice their ratings. And the fact that he [Youngkin] is willing to go along with it instead of talking about serious problems that actually affect serious people? That's a shame," Obama said. "That's not what this election's about. That's not what you need, Virginia."
That comment also resulted and swift criticism on social media and from GOP heavyweights.
In several polls in the final months of the race, education was the third-biggest issue among voters. However, a Washington Post-Schar School poll conducted in the closing days of the race found that even larger percentages of voters said education was their top issue.
"The McAuliffe campaign's closing pitch: Virginia parents are liars who don't really mind having their children indoctrinated with toxic marxism, racist CRT or radical woke ideology," former President Trump adviser Steven Miller tweeted.
Florida GOP Sen. Rick Scott told Fox News radio: "This is the divider in chief himself. He never supported law enforcement, who had the most political Attorney General currently, as far as I know of, in history. And he’s talking about Republicans having the culture wars?"
