A massive chunk of the country is expected to be hit by winter snowstorms while the other half prepares for a heat wave.

Eighteen states, including Michigan and California, are currently on alert for heavy snowfall and strong winds, while states in the south are expected to get a heat wave, according to ABC News.

By the end of the week, the storm is predicted to move towards the East Coast and hit upstate New York and New England. Heavy ice could hit Chicago and Detroit.

In sharp contrast, a massive heat wave is expected from Texas to Washington D.C. Reports say that temperatures on Tuesday could reach 85 degrees in Dallas, 86 in Orlando, and 80 for Mardi Gras in New Orleans, which would make for one of the warmest celebrations on record.

Thursday temperatures are forecast to reach 83 degrees in New Orleans, 81 in Atlanta and 85 in Raleigh, N.C.

If Washington D.C., hits 80 degrees as predicted, it will be only the fourth time it's been that high since records have been kept.
