Kamala Harris maintains she will follow VP 'tradition' in not criticizing current president

Harris has been under heat recently for defending Biden's mental fitness, even after a rough debate performance forced him to drop out of the presidential race. She has also attempted to defend the president while simultaneously trying to separate herself from his administration by arguing she would not be a continuation of Biden.

Vice President Kamala Harris on Friday maintained that she will remain loyal to President Joe Biden, which she argues is a tradition among sitting vice presidents when it comes to their bosses.

Harris has been under heat recently for defending Biden's mental fitness, even after a rough debate performance forced him to drop out of the presidential race. Harris has also attempted to defend the president while simultaneously trying to separate herself from his administration by arguing she would not be a continuation of Biden.

“I mean to be very candid with you; including Mike Pence, vice presidents are not critical of their presidents," Harris told NBC News during a campaign event in Michigan. "I think that really, actually, in terms of the tradition of it, and also just going forward, it does not make for a productive and important relationship."

Pence, who was former President Donald Trump's vice president, had mostly remained loyal to the former president until he decided to run for president himself this election cycle. Even then, he has defended the Trump administration's work as a whole, but still criticized Trump.

Harris said she has her own policy ideas, including expanding Medicare to cover home care, and additional aid for small businesses and first-time home buyers.

“Those are the experiences and the ideas that I have that are about moving forward and really being a part of the next generation of leadership in America,” Harris said.

Biden also lauded Harris' vision for the country on Tuesday, claiming that her take was "fresh and new."

“Kamala will take the country in her own direction. And that’s one of the most important differences in this election,” Biden said. “Kamala’s perspective on our problems will be fresh and new. Donald Trump’s perspective is old and failed and, quite frankly, thoroughly, totally dishonest.”
