Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says Zeldin losing by only five points is a 'wake up call'

Former New York Democrat Gov. Andrew Cuomo says that New York Republican gubernatorial nominee Lee Zeldin's close race with current Gov. Kathy Hochul should be a "wake-up call" to Democrats. 

Cuomo made an appearance on WABC 770 AM's "Cats at Night" radio show with host John Catsimatidis to discuss the outcome of the midterm elections.

"He (Zeldin) was a one-issue candidate on crime, and in the parts of the state where crime isn't really a pressing issue, he didn't resonate," Cuomo said on the radio show, according to The Hill. 

"But to come within 5 points — that's the closest race since George Pataki, I mean, so that is a real wake-up call," Cuomo continued. "And it did cost Democrats, it has cost Democrats precious congressional seats."

Current Democrat Gov. Kathy Hochul defeated Lee Zeldin by only 5.8%. 

Cuomo also went on to criticize Zeldin's positions on issues such as the Second Amendment. 

"Zeldin was a rabid pro-lifer. He's on the wrong side of marriage equality, and he's on the wrong side of guns. He is a real rabid conservative," Cuomo told the station. "For him to come within 5 points is incredible."

Republicans picked up some seats in Long Island, and results are still waiting to come in on other races that are too close to call.
