Democrats sending $7 million to Georgia to bolster Senate runoff next month
Funds will promote "direct voter contact programs."
Democratic officials are sending a whopping $7 million in funding to on-the-ground efforts in Georgia in the hopes of shoring up support for Sen. Raphael Warnock as he fights for re-election in a runoff next month.
Warnock is being challenged for the Senate seat by Republican candidate Herschel Walker. The two politicians are facing off after both failed to receive more than 50% of the vote; under Georgia statute, the top two candidates in such a race must compete in an additional election shortly thereafter.
On Thursday the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said in a press release that it was distributing $7 million throughout Georgia in order to "fund direct voter contact programs to reach Georgians across the state, building and expanding on the Warnock campaign’s robust field organizing effort."
Democratic organizers "will be reaching voters on their doors to highlight the importance of participating in the runoff election," the DSCC said.
Warnock pulled down several thousand more votes than Walker in the general election, but Libertarian candidate Chase Oliver secured enough votes to prevent either one from reaching the necessary 50%+ threshold.
