Chris Christie drops out of 2024 presidential race

Former New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie will reportedly drop out of the Republican primary contest.

Christie made the announcement during a campaign event in Windham, N.H.

"It's clear to me tonight, that there isn't a path for me to win the nomination, which is why I'm suspending my campaign tonight for president of the United States," he declared.

"I've never believed that Donald Trump was a foregone conclusion as our nominee in this race," he said, before lamenting that anti-Trump figures had not spoken out against his candidacy.

"Our country is angry. It's divided. It's accomplishing little. And it is leading our citizens to be exhausted," he continued.

Christie then excoriated Wyoming GOP Sen. John Barrasso and House Majority Whip Tom Emmer for endorsing Trump, saying "they know better."

Ahead of the event, CNN reported that he would make the announcement, citing "a source familiar with his plans."

He currently polls in fifth place, with 3.5% in the RealClearPolitics polling average. He commands an average 12.0% in New Hampshire.

Throughout his campaign, Christie has largely criticized former President Donald Trump.
