Washington man sentenced to 28 days, supervised release, over Capitol riot

A Washington state man has been sentenced to 21 days in prison and supervised release for his role in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. 

Jeremy Grace, 38, of Battle Ground, Wash., pleaded guilty in April to one misdemeanor count of entering and remaining in a restricted building. Federal prosecutors dropped three additional charges as part of a plea deal. 

“I take responsibility for my actions that day," Grace said over the phone during his sentencing hearing. "I never wanted to destroy any property or hurt any individuals, and I did not do so.”

Jeremy, along with his father, Jeff, traveled and stayed with a member of the Proud Boys, one of the extremist groups that was present at the riot. 

Both the defense and prosecutors confirmed that Jeremy did not belong to the Proud Boys, though he attended a gathering of Proud Boys members the day before the riot. 

On Jan. 6, the pair met up with a group of Proud Boys at the Washington Monument and marched to the Capitol building. They never attended President Trump’s rally. 

Surveillance images show that the pair were among the first to enter the Capitol building and took selfies both inside and outside the building. Grace’s defense attorney stated that Grace was only inside for about eight minutes.

Grace’s father has a sentencing hearing scheduled for Jul. 28.
