President Donald Trump on Wednesday said the bishop who directly appealed to him at the Service of Prayer for the Nation a day earlier to "have mercy" on illegal migrants and transgenders "brought her church into the world of politics."

“The so-called Bishop who spoke at the National Prayer Service on Tuesday morning was a Radical Left hard line Trump hater. She brought her church into the World of politics in a very ungracious way," Trump wrote on TRUTH Social. "She was nasty in tone, and not compelling or smart."

Trump also called on her and the church, the Washington National Cathedral, to apologize to him.

“She is not very good at her job! She and her church owe the public an apology!” Trump also posted.

During the service Tuesday at the cathedral, Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde said to Trump from the pulpit: "I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared. There are gay, lesbian, transgender children, Democratic, Republican, independent families – some who fear for their lives."

Her sermon follows Trump's campaign to mass deport illegal migrants and an executive order Monday, his first day in office, that states the government will recognize only two genders – male and female.

She told CNN on Tuesday night: “I wanted to counter as gently as I could with a reminder of their humanity and place in our wider community. I wanted to say there is room for mercy and a broader compassion.”
