A local police officer, responding to rallygoers' warnings, reportedly went to confront the shooter

Shortly before the attempt on former President Donald Trump's life, rallygoers reportedly warned local police of "a man climbing to the roof of a nearby building," The Associated Press reported.

"One local police officer climbed to the roof and encountered Crooks, who pointed his rifle at the officer," an anonymous law enforcement officer told the AP. "The officer retreated down the ladder, and Crooks quickly took a shot toward Trump, and that’s when Secret Service snipers shot him."

The Secret Service's failure to stop the attempted assassination has led to significant scrutiny of their leadership and performance. Congressional hearings to review what happened in this case are planned for the week right after the Republican National Convention takes place.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) of the House Oversight Committee has announced that the committee will call Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle for a hearing July 22.
