California GOP Assemblyman Bill Essayli on Thursday called on Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass to step down from her position as the wildfires continue to rage around the city, causing homes to burn and thousands to flee.

"She needs to step down," Essayli said on the "Just the News, No Noise" TV show. "It's totally inexcusable and unconscionable. We knew this wind event was coming."

Bass is currently facing backlash for being on a trip to Ghana when the wildfires first broke out.

"When there's a hurricane coming to the state of Florida, you don't see Ron DeSantis booking it out of the country," Essayli said. "He's moving assets. He's moving personnel. They're making plans. They're warning the public. They're educating the public on what to do. They didn't do any of that. She left to Africa and she didn't even come back until after the fires had already started."

He added that Bass was not a real leader.

President Joe Biden on Wednesday ordered the Pentagon to deploy 10 Navy helicopters to help fight the half-dozen fires raging across Southern California.
