Possible bomb cyclone headed toward the northeast this weekend, meteorologists say

Meteorologists are forecasting a winter bomb cyclone to hit the county's Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions this weekend.

A bomb cyclone is classified as a quick drop in barometric pressure that brings heavy precipitation and high winds.

"Confidence is increasing that a significant winter storm will create considerable impacts Friday through the weekend from the Mid-Atlantic through the Northeast, "The National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center said Tuesday.

Temperatures are expected Saturday to dip 10 to 20 degrees below normal for this time of year accompanied by high winds, coastal flooding, freezing rain and snow as deep as a foot in some areas – impacting road conditions and travel in the Northeast.

"It is becoming more likely that it will bring significant snow, sleet and freezing rain to the region, including the I-95 metropolitan areas. Hazardous travel conditions are possible," the weather center also said.

AccuWeather senior meteorologist Adam Douty said: "You may want to have some alternate plans to try to avoid that Friday-night-into-Saturday-morning travel period."
