Twitter says President Trump’s personal account – @RealDonaldTrump – could face restrictions or even be banned after he leaves the White House.

Trump's tweets are now protected by the social media platform's "World Leaders policy," which means Twitter will in most cases choose to leave up a tweet that breaks its rules.

The policy is based on the principle that most people would like to see what their heads of state are saying, according to Forbes.

However, after noon on Jan. 20, 2021, Trump will no longer be under Twitter's world leaders status, so he'll have follow the same guidelines as other users, a Twitter spokesperson confirmed to Forbes.

Trump has posted tens of thousands of tweets and has more than 88 million Twitter followers.

Since Nov. 3 election night, Twitter has been adding a statement to many of Trump's tweets that states: "Some or all of the content shared in this Tweet is disputed and might be misleading about an election or other civic process."

One such post was when Trump said: "All of the recent Biden claimed States will be legally challenged by us for Voter Fraud and State Election Fraud. Plenty of proof - just check out the Media. WE WILL WIN! America First!"

Twitter also provides another link aside the president's tweets that take visitors to a page titled "civic integrity policy."

"What is in violation of this policy?" the page ask viewers. "This policy addresses 4 categories of misleading behavior and content:

In one category – "misleading information about outcomes" –Twitter states, "We will label or remove false or misleading information intended to undermine public confidence in an election or other civic process. This includes but is not limited to:"

  • disputed claims that could undermine faith in the process itself, such as unverified information about election rigging, ballot tampering, vote tallying, or certification of election results; and
  • misleading claims about the results or outcome of a civic process which calls for or could lead to interference with the implementation of the results of the process, e.g.
  • claiming victory before election results have been certified, inciting unlawful conduct to prevent the procedural or practical implementation of election results (note that our violent threats policy may also be relevant for threats not covered by this policy).

Twitter has already announced that it would hand over Trump's other account – @POTUS, which stands for "president of the United States" – to Joe Biden on Jan. 20.
