Trump: Administration has cut eight federal regs for every one enacted, eclipsing campaign promise

President Trump on Thursday touted his efforts to cut federal regulations, saying his 2016 campaign promise to permanently remove two federal regulations for every one his administration enacts has far exceeded its mark.

“Before I came into office, American workers were smothered by a merciless avalanche of wasteful and expensive and intrusive federal regulations,” Trump said at a Rose Garden event. 

The president, using the power of office to showcase his accomplishments ahead of reelection, said that since taking office in January 2017 his administration has in fact removed nearly eight federal regulations for every new one enacted.  

“What an incredible achievement,” said Trump, who in recent days has also rolled out an infrastructure plan, popular among many voters of all political parties.

Trump said the cuts in regulations have saved the average American about $2,300 and that African-Americans are among those who have most benefited financially.

The White House said ahead of the president’s speech that the reforms over the past three years have saved the country a total $50 billion in regulatory costs, resulting, prior to the impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic, bringing more than 2 million Americans out of poverty.
