Jill Biden says 2024 election is 'most certainly not about age'
The president's reelection campaign have worked to highlight his priorities for seniors, which include strengthening Social Security and Medicare, and lowering prescription drug prices. They have also organized pancake breakfasts, pickleball tournaments, bingo games, and ice cream socials in hopes of mobilizing the older generation.
First lady Jill Biden, speaking to a group of seniors on Thursday night, dismissed concerns about her husband's age, saying that he was "one of the most effective presidents" in recent American history because of his age, not in spite of it as conservatives have alleged.
The comment is not the first time the first lady tried to argue that the president's age was an asset rather than a liability. She told "The View" last month that President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are "basically the same age," and claimed in January that Joe Biden's age was an "asset," because it gave him wisdom and experience, Fox News reported.
Jill Biden's latest remark occurred in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where she kicked off the Seniors for Biden-Harris campaign push. She also campaigned in Minnesota, California, and Nevada this week, and will conclude her tour with a campaign stop in Arizona on Saturday, according to CNN.
“This isn’t just about stopping an extremist, and this election is most certainly not about age,” Jill Biden said. “Joe and that other guy are essentially the same age. Let’s not be fooled. But what this election is about, it’s about the character of the person leading our country ... Joe Biden is a healthy, wise 81-year-old ready and willing to work for you every day to make our future better. Joe isn’t one of the most effective presidents of our lives in spite of his age, but because of it.”
Jill Biden, who is 73 and a senior herself, also expressed pride in her age and claimed she felt emotionally stronger than when she was younger.
“The woman I am today is wiser, stronger, more insightful and more confident than I was all those years ago,” the first lady said. “Every line on my face has been earned by the furrowed brows of difficult decisions made. By the sun of countless roads traveled, by the sweet strain of deep laughter with the people I love. Age is a gift.”
The comment on age occurred a day before Trump turned 78, meaning he will be 82 at the end of the next presidential term. Jill Biden claimed the former president is "dangerous" to American security, and the future of the country.
