The U.S. Capitol Police Officers' Union on Monday called for the U.S. Capitol Police Board to select a new chief from among experienced, senior officers as the current chief is about to retire.

U.S. Capitol Police Chief J. Thomas Manger will retire next month, "sparking the search for a new leader at a crucial time for the United States Capitol Police," according to the union.

Manger began his tenure following the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and oversaw "sweeping security advances," the union stated.

“The task of overhauling this police force has just begun and the advances we’ve seen must be carried forward by a leader who has the trust and respect of the front-line officers,” Union Chairman Gus Papathanasiou said in a statement Monday.

“We need a Chief with an exemplary record in the department, who has deep experience across every division and who has stood beside police officers in their most challenging times of service.”
