Hawaiian Islands spared direct hit from Hurricane Douglas, after bringing heavy winds and rain

The Hawaiian Islands appear to have avoided a direct hit from Hurricane Douglas that is now moving away in the Pacific Ocean, forecasters said Monday.

The Category One storm on Sunday skirted the big island of Oahu but still poses some danger to several small islands including Kauai and Niihau.

The island of Maui took much of the brunt of the storm, with high winds toppling small trees and generating heavy surf. The storm is now tracking west, northwest. Parts of the island chain were forecast to get 5 to 15 inches of rain.
