Treasury Department sanctions Mexican cartel linked to drug trafficking and fuel theft network
The cartel, which the Trump administration designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization in February, is a violent offshoot of the infamous Sinaloa cartel, and is considered one of Mexico's most powerful cartels.
The Treasury Department on Thursday announced new sanctions on three people and two entities connected to a drug-trafficking and fuel-theft network that is linked to Mexico's Cartel Jalisco New Generation (CJNG).
The cartel, which the Trump administration designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization in February, is a violent offshoot of the infamous Sinaloa cartel, and is considered one of Mexico's most powerful cartels. The drug smuggling network allegedly generates hundreds of millions of dollars each year.
The new sanctions, which freeze any assets the individuals and entities have in the U.S. and prevent the country from doing business with them, have been imposed on CJNG top members Cesar Morfin Morfin and his brothers Alvaro Noe Morfin Morfin and Remigio Morfin Morfin. All three are Mexican nationals.
“Fuel theft and crude oil smuggling are cash cows for CJNG’s narco-terrorist enterprise, providing a lucrative revenue stream for the group and enabling it to wreak havoc in Mexico and the United States,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement. “Treasury, as part of the Administration’s whole-of-government effort, will continue to use all available tools to relentlessly target drug cartels and foreign terrorist organizations to Make America Safe Again.”
National Border Patrol Council President Paul Anthony Perez praised the sanctions in a statement shared with Just The News.
“President Trump promised the American public that he would ensure that their safety was at the forefront of every action that he took when he secured the border," Perez said. "These actions today will ensure that the cartels no longer have the ability to provide unlimited funds to further their criminal enterprises and, at the same time, it will allow the United States Government to disrupt their daily activities on both sides of the border.
"Their reign of terror will come to an end because of the strength and power that President Trump has brought back to the Oval Office," he added.
