National parks closed by COVID-19 will reopen as soon as possible, Interior Secretary says
Bernhardt says his agency is using Trump guidelines and is working with governors to reopen the parks.
America's national parks that have been shuttered due to coronavirus will reopen as soon as possible, Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt said.
Agencies will follow President Trump's Opening Up America Again guidelines and will work with state governors to reopen closed parks, he said.
"In accordance with this guidance and in coordination with governors across the country, the Department of the Interior and the National Park Service are working to reopen the American people’s national parks as rapidly as possible," Bernhardt said in a statement.
Yellowstone National Park, home of the renowned geyser "Old Faithful," and the Grand Canyon National Park both have been closed amid the pandemic.
"Across the 500 million acres of public lands stewarded by the Department of the Interior, an overwhelming majority of these lands have remained safely accessible to the American public," Bernhardt noted.
