Biden HUD Secretary Fudge to step down
Biden responded to her resignation announcement by listing her accomplishments and slamming former President Donald Trump.
Housing and Urban Development Secretary Marcia Fudge told her staff Monday that she is stepping down next week, less than eight months before President Joe Biden is set to vie for reelection.
Being secretary "was the ideal opportunity to culminate a career focused on doing the most good for the most people, including those who have often been left behind or left out," Fudge told staffers, according to Politico.
Biden responded to her resignation announcement by listing her accomplishments and slamming former President Donald Trump, his likely 2024 election opponent.
"When I took office, we inherited a broken housing system, with fair housing and civil rights protections badly dismantled under the prior administration," he said. Fudge worked to reverse these things on her first day in office, he also said.
"I'm grateful for all of her contributions toward a housing system that works for all Americans, and I wish her well in her next chapter," he added.
Deputy Secretary Adrianne Todman will serve as acting secretary upon Fudge's departure.
If Fudge leaves as planned next week, she will become the second cabinet official to leave the administration, following the departure of former Labor Secretary Marty Walsh last year.
