Two U.S. Capitol Police officers sue Trump in connection with Jan. 6 siege, allege related injuries
One officer alleges being "attacked relentlessly," other says he and colleagues pelted with rocks, attacked with sticks.
Two Capitol Hill police officers are suing former President Trump for alleged physical and emotional injuries in connection with the Jan. 6 siege on the U.S. Capitol building.
Officers James Blassingame and Sidney Hemby made the claims in a lawsuit filed this week in federal court, alleging Trump riled his supporters and encouraged them to commit acts of violence against them, according to The Washington Post.
"Both United States Capitol Police Officers reported for duty on January 6, 2021, without any suspicion that they would soon become the targets of Trump’s followers," the suit states. "The insurrectionist mob, which Trump had inflamed, encouraged, incited, directed, and aided and abetted, forced its way over and past the plaintiffs and their fellow officers, pursuing and attacking them inside and outside the United States Capitol, and causing the injuries," reads the suit, obtained by new outlets.
Hemby says he was "attacked relentlessly" while protecting the building and Blassingame says he and colleagues were pelted with rocks and attacked with sticks and other items, the suit alleges.
Trump spoke at a rally prior to the siege. The House voted in favor of an article of impeachment that stated Trump incited an insurrection, but the Senate did not vote in favor of convicting him.
